From remodeling your master bedroom to building window boxes for your home, there are plenty of improvement projects that can easily be completed during quarantine — even if you don’t have a whole lot of DIY experience under your belt. According to Tool Review Lab, DIY renovation projects are the safest types of home improvements to make amid the coronavirus pandemic, as these projects keep strangers and potentially harmful germs out of your home. Plus, they give you something fun and productive to work on while you’re sheltering in place!

Take Your Master Bedroom to the Next Level

If you haven’t upgraded your bedroom decor in years, the quarantine could be the perfect time to take your master bedroom to the next level — especially since retailers like Wayfair are running online sales and offering promo codes and discounts during the pandemic.

When redesigning your master bedroom, you could:

  1. Paint the walls a fresh, new color.

  2. Rearrange the layout of your furniture.

  3. Upgrade your duvet, throw pillows, and curtains.

  4. Clean out your closets and create a donation pile for the things you don’t need.

  5. Clean old or dirty carpeting.

If you haven’t replaced your mattress in more than eight years, this could also be the time to do it. Mattress companies like Casper, Tuft and Needle, and Helix will even ship your new mattress directly to your door, eliminating the need to shop in-store during the pandemic.

Update Your Kitchen Cabinet Hardware

To revitalize the look of your kitchen without spending a whole lot of time or money on tools and materials, the quarantine could be the perfect time to replace your existing cabinet hardware with new knobs, handles, or pulls. To tackle this DIY project, you’ll simply need to purchase your new hardware, remove the existing hardware from your cabinets, and fill the existing screw holes with wood putty. After the wood putty dries, use a pencil to mark the new drill holes, drill pilot holes into the marks you’ve made, and attach your new hardware to the cabinets. Updating your kitchen cabinet hardware is as easy and affordable as that!

Build and Hang Window Boxes

If you’re looking to tackle an outdoor project or two, you could build window boxes, fill them with brightly colored flowers, and hang them from the front of your home for a little added curb appeal. According to HGTV, this project is simple enough to complete in one day — and it’s suitable for DIYers of all experience levels.

To get started, you’ll need to purchase all the tools and materials you’ll need to complete this DIY project. A few of these materials include:

  1. Cedar or cypress boards.

  2. Pressure-treated 2×4 lumber.

  3. Sandpaper, wood filler, primer, and paint.

  4. Screws and nails for wood and concrete.

To avoid shopping in-store during the coronavirus outbreak, you could use Home Depot’s free curbside pickup service when purchasing the tools and materials you’ll need. Alternatively, you can shop online and have your items shipped to your home — or you could pick them up at Home Depot’s in-store service desk.

Financing Your Projects

These three home improvement projects will be a great use of your time during the quarantine, and they may even encourage you to make some larger upgrades in the future. From remodeling your bathroom and kitchen to installing a patio or deck, the options are endless. Plus, you could refinance your mortgage to pay for all or part of your renovations if you meet eligibility requirements and have equity built up in your home. Before shopping around for potential lenders, however, you’ll need to make a checklist of all the documentation you’ll need — including pay stubs and tax returns.

Whichever home improvement projects you choose to complete during the quarantine, you’ll be passing the time productively — and you might even learn a new skill or two. From building window boxes to redesigning your master bedroom, the coronavirus pandemic is the perfect time to tackle any and all items on your home improvement to-do list!
